General Motors Corp. said it will open a factory in Michigan to make battery packs for its new Chevrolet Volt, raising its bet on electric cars as it revamps its business with US$17.4-billion in emergency loans pledged by the Canadian and U.S. governments.
The plant will start building the lithium-ion packs in 2010 using battery cells made by Compact Power Inc., a division of South Korean-based manufacturer LG Chem Ltd., GM said. It will be the first such facility operated in the United States by a major automaker.
